The timeline

GTA VI's release date has moved twice in public:

When What was said Date promised
Dec 2023 Trailer 1 2025 (year, no day)
May 2025 Trailer 2 26 May 2026
Nov 2025 Rockstar statement 19 November 2026

From first announcement to the current date is roughly three years between reveal and release — and nearly thirteen years since GTA V in 2013.

What Rockstar said

In both cases the public justification was essentially the same: more time for polish. There was no mention of specific technical problems, a change of scope, or a platform switch. Take-Two, Rockstar's parent, has kept to the line that launch quality is the priority rather than the date.

Worth recording what was not said: Rockstar never publicly detailed what exactly was still outstanding.

Why this isn't unusual

Big-game delays are the rule rather than the exception — and Rockstar has form:

  • GTA V slipped from spring to September 2013.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 was delayed twice, from autumn 2017 to October 2018.

In both cases the shipped game was well received. That guarantees nothing about GTA VI, but it does show Rockstar has a consistent practice of moving the date rather than shipping on the original one.

The real cost of waiting

The cost isn't sentimental, it's informational. The longer the window between announcement and release, the more room there is for leaks, rumours, pre-order scams and fake "gameplay" circulating as real. The practical side of that is in our guide to scams.

On the budget side, estimates of $1–2 billion in development cost circulate, which would make GTA VI the most expensive game ever produced. Rockstar has never confirmed that figure. Treat it as press and analyst speculation, not fact.

What to watch between now and November

A third trailer, focused on gameplay, is the most likely milestone. As of the end of July 2026 it still hasn't arrived. If the 19 November date holds — and there's no public indication otherwise — pre-launch material should concentrate into the coming months.
